I think we’ve all heard David Stern’s recent comments about LeBron James having the potential to be the best player in the history of the league. What you might not have heard is that Stern hopes LeBron will stay in Cleveland. When asked if he had any clue where LeBron would end up next season the commissioner replied, “None whatsoever, although I hope it’s in Cleveland.” Did the NBA’s commissioner just say NoYork?
The Cavs traveled to Columbus for their final preseason game against the Celtics. Despite not playing Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce, the Celtics defeated the Cavs 96-82. LeBron finished with 18 points in the loss. After the game during an interview LeBron appeared on camera wearing custom New York Yankees Beats by Dre headphones. (Check the video at the 1:35 mark, absolutely disgusting)
Special thanks to everyone who bought shirts in Columbus. We appreciate your support. Now if LeBron would only wise up and get some new headphones!
The Cavaliers come to Columbus on Wednesday for their last preseason game against the Boston Celtics. The NoYork staff will be outside Value City Arena selling our official NoYork shirts. We will Twitter our exact location tomorrow. Hope to see you there!
Hopefully this won't be a court side scene in Brooklyn any time soon
Mikhail Prokhorov has agreed to a deal to gain ownership of the New Jersey Nets in principle. The deal hinges on the fate of the Atlantic Yards project which is currently in legal limbo. However, if the project does go forward, it won’t be the only hurdle Prokhorov will face. He must also be approved by 23 of the NBA’s 30 owners before he can officially own the Nets. He is scheduled to meet with several owner’s this Wednesday during one of the league’s advisory and finance committee meetings. Just thought you should be aware…NoYork!!!
"Bron let's face it, neither of us wants to play for the Knicks, right?"
An article on the New York Post’s website quotes Stephon Marbury as saying, “LeBron isn’t coming to a rebuilding team. Why would he come to a rebuilding team. It makes no sense. Is this franchise built to win a championship or make money?”
In my opinion Marbury’s comments were aimed more at the Knicks than LeBron’s upcoming free agency. Marbury has decided to take a year away from the game of basketball. In the meantime he’ll be telling anyone who will listen how bad the Knicks were, are, and will be in the future.
Marbury’s commentary on LeBron seems to make sense for now, but who knows what the Knicks have planned for this summer. They are still in a position to make a run at the King in 2010, but we’ll hope Starbury is right! NoYork!!!
Revised model of Brooklyn's proposed Atlantic Yards
Bruce Ratner is the real estate developer who’s heading up the Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn, New York. He owns the New Jersey Nets and he’s hoping to move them to Brooklyn, making their arena the centerpiece of the Atlantic Yards (I’m assuming it’s the blue structure in the middle of this post’s picture). Ironically enough Bruce Ratner was born in Cleveland!
On Wednesday Ratner appeared before the highest court in New York in an attempt to move his 22-acre project forward. The road block comes in two forms. First, the project must fit in the Public Use Clause of New York’s state Constitution. Ratner’s opponents argued, “I don’t think anybody can argue that its primary purpose is to provide facilities to community groups. It’s primary purpose is to house a for-profit professional basketball organization.”
The second problem is that the state and city have both pledged to give $100 million to the project, but it remains to be seen whether this is legal under the state Constitution. These two pledges are only legal when low-income units are being replaced by more low-income units. The Atlantic Yards project plans on having 3,000 market-value units and 2.250 low-income units.
This whole process has become very complicated. The bottom line is that the court will make it’s ruling sometime around Thanksgiving. If they rule in favor of the Atlantic Yards project Ratner will have a good chance to move the Nets to Brooklyn. If the decision drags out much longer he will probably not get the support and funding he needs from Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov.
I’m hoping that this project doesn’t work out, and you should be doing the same. If the Atlantic Yards project doesn’t materialize it makes the case for LeBron to the Nets a lot less likely. The back up plan is to move the Nets to Newark, which doesn’t sound as appealing in my opinion. No need to hold your breath until Thanksgiving, but it’s something to keep your eye on. As always, NoYork!!!
In an article on the New York Daily News website Larry Hughes has stated the he believes LeBron will stay in Cleveland. Hughes still speaks regularly with LeBron and is convinced that LeBron will not be leaving once he becomes a free agent this summer. Hughes believes that LeBron is happy with the moves the Cavs have made and the direction that the organization is headed in. Here’s hoping that Larry’s predictions are better than his jumpshot.
I can see it now, Mick Boogie rocking our shirt in New York!
Former Cavaliers DJ and Ohio native Mick Boogie recently blogged about our NoYork tees. Mick Boogie is an internationally known mixtape composer who’s collaborated with Jay-Z, Eminem, and Talib Kweli. We appreciate the shout out. Check it out here.
The C- was a bit harsh, but at least he'd wear it!
Vince Grzegorek, of The Sporting News’ blog First Cuts, recently featured NoYork.com tees on his blog. He commented on the number of “LeBron/Cleveland/Stay Here websites” that are popping up on the internet. Then he graded our shirt. We got B’s for originality and price, but suffered in the relevance category only getting a C- (citing that lots of teams will be rumored to be after LeBron) Our design did earn us an A, and Vince said he’d wear one of our shirts. Nice!
The Cavs third preseason game against the Olympiacos of Greece was dominated by the Cavs from the very beginning. Here are LeBron and Shaq’s highlights from the 17 point victory. The pair both scored 12 points in a game where they started to look like a scary combination (especially if you were sitting behind the basket when Shaq went flying into the second row!)
After watching the game I knew I needed something to drive the highlights. So I got in contact with a friend of mine, a little before midnight, and asked him if he had any beats I could use for the video. E Dot came through with this gem. Check out his Twitter page for more good music.
